Getting Customers Ready for Storm Season.

In our last article, we discussed the opportunity you have to help homeowners and businesses prepare their roofs for the upcoming storm season. Our Spring Storm Maintenance Checklist not only provided great information to share with prospective customers, it also gave straightforward guidelines on what you should do once you sold the job. But what materials and products should you have on hand to do the work? Here’s the rundown:

High-Quality Roofing Sealant

One crucial step on the maintenance checklist was to check and repair roof seals and flashing. It’s vital to reapply sealant around vents, chimneys, and skylights as needed to prevent leaks. This is an area where it’s easy to skimp, but don’t be tempted. Cheap, low-quality sealants won’t help to prevent leaks or prolong roof life. Insist on quality like Marco’s Weather-Tite™ Metal Roof Sealant. Formulated to outperform silicones, tri-polymers, and polyurethanes, Marco’s Weather-Tite Metal Roof Sealant provides a waterproof seal against water, wind, dust, dirt, or other filtrations. Available in more than 14 standard colors, it is tack-free in 45 minutes and is completely paintable (excluding translucent). This eco-friendly MS polymer sealant adheres to almost any common building substrate or material and features chemical curing of <1% VOC.

Marco’s X-Seal™ is another excellent solution. X-Seal expands from 1/4” to 1” and from 3/8” to 1 1/2”, allowing it to fill any shaped gap in the construction of metal buildings, doors and windows, concrete, wood, and more. It is adaptable to most roof panels, including hips and valleys. Highly resistant to bugs and vermin, X-Seal maintains its seal in heat and cold and will not leach out or stain.

Finally, Mastix™ is our versatile, trimmable, end-lap sealing tape that joins metal to metal and seals around windows, doors, roof vents, stacks, access doors, and other penetration points. Non-staining and permanently flexible, Mastix stays in place with no melting or oozing, even in extreme heat.

Superior Flashing Solutions

When replacing deteriorated flashing to maintain waterproofing, you can look to Marco as well. Our flashing products are made of EPDM or silicone and compounded specifically for maximum resistance to weathering due to ozone and ultraviolet light.

From universal RoofBoot™ round and square flexible sleeves to specialty boots (for extreme angles, retrofits, multi-flash, solar, multi-port, and more), and even our Box Cutter Expansion Joint “stretch and seal” roof flashing system for square ducts, chimneys, and skylights, you’ll find solutions for whatever flashing needs you find during your spring roofing inspections.

Other Products

In addition to the above, your inspection could reveal the need for other quality solutions. Of course, if shingles are damaged, you could recommend upgrading to storm-rated shingles that provide enhanced protection. For metal roofs or other materials, you would of course recommend repairing the damaged places as well. Beyond the shingles or roof panels and tiles, you might also find the need for:

  • Gutter Guards and Screens – To reduce debris accumulation and improve drainage efficiency, you may recommend installation of quality gutter guards and screens.
  • Algae and Moss Prevention Treatments – If you find excessive trouble in this area, sweep off moss, algae, or debris that can retain moisture and consider applying a preventative treatment to inhibit future moss and algae growth.

By following the checklist and utilizing high-performance roofing products, you can ensure your clients’ roofs remain strong and secure through spring and beyond. Proactive maintenance now means fewer emergency repairs later, keeping both you and your clients prepared for whatever the season brings.
